WHAT IS THE K-CUP???

On November 19, 2011, the East Coast Wrestling Association (ECWA) will hold the very first annual K-CUP (Kangaroo Cup) TAG TEAM TOURNAMENT in Newark, Delaware. The K-CUP is basically the SUPER 8 for tag teams. The K-CUP will be part of double-header event on Nov 19th at the Boys & Girls Club in Newark, with an afternoon card at 4PM and the K-CUP at 7PM.

The K-Cup is an 8 participant, single elimination tournament with 4 quarter-final matches, followed by a semi-final round and finals much like the ECWA Super 8.

The ECWA named the K-CUP in honor of the Fabulous Kangaroos, one of wrestling’s first full-time tag team specialists in the United States who popularized Australian rules tag team wrestling, which is tag team wrestling rules that you are accustomed to today.

The Kangaroos, while not the first tag team in the literal sense in the United States, they were one of the first to work as “tag team specialist.” They were one of the first to use or popularize a team or unit name, and a name that lived on with different incarnations with different members (original members were Al Costello and Roy Heffernan). They also were one of the first early adopters of entertainment aspects of pro wrestling using ring entrance music (Waltzing Mathilda) and also their native Australian ring jackets, bush hats and flag. They were great self-promoters too, for example they would make and throw out cardboard boomerangs to the crowd that had their name and pictures on it.

Read about the Fabulous Kangaroos:

http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/2010/08/06/16656071.html

Waltzing Matilda, the unoffical National Anthem of Australia and entrance theme music of the the K-CUP namesake the Fabulous Kangaroos, pioneers in tag team wrestling in the United States and one of the first to dedicate their careers to the artform of tag team wrestling in lieu of singles competition. To be played at the Opening Ceremony of the 1st Annual K-CUP Tag Team Tournament!!!

KIRBY MACK INJURED, ROYAL STUDS REPLACE MACKS IN THE K-CUP

Dear ECWA –

My name is Kirby Mack and I am injured.

In the summer I pulled what I thought to be a muscle, no big deal right? In typical warrior mode fashion, I.E. Wrestler, I took two weeks off slapped a sponge-bob band aid on it and considered myself healed. From time to time I would feel a slight tension in my right shoulder but thought it was just aggravated.

In preparation for the K-Cup my brother and I wrestled in a small little town outside of Asheviile NC. Though we came out victorious, as we no doubt would have done against the Logans this Saturday, I sustained an injury. The muscle bound idiots who wrestled us thought it would be fun to give your’s truly a burning hammer onto my brother. At that very moment I felt a popping and burning sensation in my right shoulder. I attempted to just sleep it off but woke up early next morning in immense pain with limited mobility. An initial doctors visited diagnosed me with a tear in my large middle tendon. But being the awesome person I am I knew that you must always get a second opinion. The following day I was given an MRI which showed an acute tear in my rotator cuff. For those of you saying, “Ouch that sucks! An acute tear!.” Just know it could be worse, It could be butt ugly. HEHE.

But seriously folks. In an attempt to avoid a major surgery I will be in a sling for the next 3-6 weeks as well as undergoing physical therapy. After talking with Joe and Mike, who have been awesomely understanding, we decided it would be in everyone’s best interest to forfeit our spot in this years K-Cup. It pains me to have to do this as the K-Cup is a huge event in professional wrestling. When we were asked to take part in this we were absolutely floored with humility.

Obviously a wrestlers health comes first and quite frankly, I did not want to cheat the fans and owners of ECWA by showing up to the K-Cup and get paid to do a job that I could not perform at 100%.

I greatly appreciate Joe and Mike’s understanding and working with me. I promise you all I will make this up to you in 2012, if ECWA will have us back. I wish all the tag teams in this event good luck, stay safe. Let’s make Tag Team wrestling relevant again.

Thanks Guys –

Kirby Mack

“Team MackTion, We’ve only just begun. ”

******************************************

Taking the palce of MackTion in the K-CUP, will be a team from NYWC, “The Royal Studs” Danny E & Kenny Royal. “Blowout Boy” Danny E (fka Dan Eckos) was a semi-finalist in the 2009 ECWA Super 8. He is also a former ECWA Mid-Atlantic Champion and Tag Team Champion with Sean Royal as the Heavyweights. Danny E has been teaming with Kenny Royal recently in the New York Wrestling Connection (NYWC) promotion. The duo recently debuted for the ECWA Nov 5th in Carney’s Point, NJ in a great match with the current Unified Tag Team Champions “FUSION DS” Damian Dragon & Matt Saigon.

ECWA wishes Kirby Mack a speedy recovery!

“Greek God” PAPADON MEETS #1 – NOV 5TH IN CARNEY’S POINT, NJ !!!!

On of the great things about the NEW ERA in the ECWA, is the new, fresh talent. Take for example, Nov 5th at the YMCA in Carney’s Point, NJ. There are several newcomers on the show- Alexander James, the returning SAT, Joel & Wil Maximo, Aramis and #1 Johnny Silver!

Silver, while still very young, packs a lot of experience. Silver is a former New York Wrestling Connection (NYWC) Heavyweight Champion. He gets his shot at the oldest heavyweight championship in independent pro wrestling in the United States when he meets ECWA Heavyweight Champion, “Greek God” PAPADON! But Papadon and Silver are no strangers, in fact they have crossed paths before, and Silver has BEATEN Papadon in the past (see the match below)! Papadon has claimed some trick videography on Silver’s part, both deep down Papadon knows he is going to have his hands full with Silver.

Silver claims to be #1, and after the month of November that could be very true as Silver has the unique opportunity to both win the ECWA heavyweight Title and also be crowned the First ECWA K-CUP Champions with tag team partner Alex Reynolds (known as the Slophunters), as Silver and Reynolds are entered into the tournament on Nov 19th in Newark, DE.

Don’t miss Papadon vs. Johnny Silver for the ECWA Heavyweight Title, Nov 5th in Carney’s Point, NJ. For tix call 609.220.5598.

Hear words from Papadon on the Nov 5th Title Match:

PAPADON vs. Silver:

WHO IS BLACKHEART???????

At ECWA on Oct 15th in Newark, DE, ECWA Commissioner DJ Hyde came to the ring for his match with Bazooka Joe. In typical DJ Hyde fashion, he tried to use his power and role as Commissioner to back out of facing Joe once again. ECWA match-maker Joe Zanolle approached ringside with 2 contracts, both signed by DJ Hyde, one for being Commissioner and one as talent. Zanolle said he went over the head of evil-ECWA owner Mike Tartaglia (who appointed Hyde as Commissioner 6 months ago) and went to Targtalia’s 2 partners in Tri-State Wrestling Entertainment, LLC (the parent company of the ECWA) and got them to outvote Tartaglia 2-to-1 in favor of terminating Hyde’s contract as Commissioner! Zanolle then stated that Hyde still had a talent contract and that if he refused to wrestle Joe, TSWE LLC would take Hyde to court for breach of contract! As a bonus for the fans, Zanolle made the match Loser Leaves ECWA for 60 days!!!! Bazooka Joe then went on to defeat Hyde to the delight of fans.

While celebrating Bazooka Joe was celebrating his win, seemingly out of nowhere, a man dressed completely in black with a mask (who has now revealed himself as Blackheart on ECWA FACEBOOK PAGE) stormed the ring and DESTROYED Bazooka Joe!!! Two security guards and a fan rushed the ring and were trashed by Blackheart. Then just as Blackheart was about to cause permanent damage to Joe, the entire ECWA locker room and staff stormed the ring led by Bazooka Joe’s best friend, Chris Wylde, and chased Blackheart out the front door where a running car was waiting for Blackheart to facilitate a quick escape! The injuries to Joe are not career threatening but he suffered head trauma, a concussion and persisting migraine headaches.

Here is the footage of the attack!

THEY PUT THE “K” IN THE K-CUP

The K-CUP will be part of double-header event on Nov 19th at the Boys & Girls Club in Newark, with an afternoon card at 4PM and the K-CUP at 7PM.

The teams competing in the inaugural K-CUP are:

In the meantime, read this article by Donnie Liable to learn more about the contributions of the Fabulous Kangeroos to the pro wrestling industry.

http://www.pwhf.org/halloffamers/bios/kangaroos.asp

The Fabulous Kangaroos

Although they may not have known it at the time they began as a unit, the Fabulous Kangaroos became one of wrestling’s first full-time tag team specialists.

Giacoma Costa, who later changed his name to Al Costello, came up with the idea of the Kangaroos while learning his craft in his adopted Australia. It was in New Zealand that this fiery wrestler of Sicilian extraction got his first break in the game. Between the years of 1950 and 1956, Costello made a name for himself and collected several singles championships while competing in New Zealand. It was during this time he first met the former Mr. Australia bodybuilding contestant and budding wrestler Roy Heffernan.

It wouldn’t be until the two crossed paths while working for Stu Hart in Calgary, Canada that the first formation of the Fabulous Kangaroos would occur. Quickly the new duo became favorite draws on the international mat scene. It had always been Al’s dream to come to America and work in Madison Square Garden. His childhood dream was realized when promoter Vince McMahon Sr. called the Kangaroos to work for his Capital Wrestling company. Hours before their first MSG appearance, Costello and Heffernan dispensed 10,000 flyers, personally putting one on every other seat in the arena, proclaiming the Fabulous Kangaroos’ achievements and arrival. On July 21, 1960 in Washington, D.C., Al and Roy copped the World Wide Wrestling Federation United States tag belts from Red and Lou Bastien.

After Heffernan returned to Australia, Al Costello continued to be a stellar tag team performer with partners Don Kent, Ray St. Clair, Al Snow, and Dennis Kass. Managers “Wild” Red Berry and “Crybaby” Gearoge Cannon helped to carry the Fabulous Kangaroos to innumerable ring victories.

Roy Heffernan passed away on September 24, 1992 and Al Costello died at age 80 on January 22,2000.

-The Midnight Sensations of Chris Rockwell and Sam Shields defeated “America’s Heroes” Kim America & “Fighting Paramedic” Corey Blaze in an important win as the Sensations head into the ECWA K-CUP Tag Team Tournament on Nov 19th!

-Adam Cole defeated Kekoa the Flyin’ Hawaiian with the Panama Sunrise.  This was an epic back and forth encounter.  Cole redeemed his loss to Kekoa from July 16th in the ECWA and the score between the two is 1-1.  Post-match, fans gave both an ovation and were chanting for “one more match!”

-“Greek God” Papadon defended the ECWA Heavyweight Title against one-half of the Unified Tag Team Champions and FUSION DS, Matt Saigon.  Saigon put up a fight that surprised many fans and Papadon himself.  Papadon hit Saigon with a barrage of moves, one after another, only to have Saigon repeatedly, almost instinctively, kick out.  Papadon showed frustration and could even be heard screaming at Saigon to “just stay down!” Eventually Saigon succumbed to Papadon’s attack, but showed the ECWA just how much fight and heart he has!
