ECWA MARCH 3, 2012 RESULTS

ECWA Invasion Grows Stronger Heading into Super 8

by Brady Hicks

March 3, 2012, Newark, Delaware–The East Coast Wrestling Association (ECWA) had its own beating heart ripped out tonight, when ECWA owner Mike Tartaglia joined up with Joel “Blackhart” Goodhart and his Black Heart invaders only minutes after the group won an important battle over Team ECWA, leaving them all laid out just one month before the eyes of the wrestling world fall upon it for the 2012 ECWA Super 8 tournament.

Ironically, Team Black Heart relied on more than just Tartaglia to pick up the win.

Instead, it was a monster of a man now known as Mustafa Aziz who interfered in the contests closing minutes, laying out ECWA’s resident monster – AHTU – who is usually more accustomed to laying out opponents himself. This interference by the man who refers to himself as “The Chosen One” allowed Breaker Morant, “Beautiful” Bobby “The Body” Shields, and “The True Professional” Josh Daniels to win the match over AHTU, “Heart Killer” Chris Wylde, and Kekoa The Flyin Hawaiian.

What does the future hold for the ECWA as it attempts to fend off the invaders from its former sister promotion, The Tri-State Wrestling Alliance … AND it‘s own owner? Only time will tell. ECWA, however, would be wise to sit up and take notice as more and more insurgents seem to come out of the woodwork every month.

Meanwhile, in other action, the disgruntled Fusion-DS team got a measure of revenge against their longtime rivals – and K-Cup tournament winners – The Midnight Sensations, taking back the ECWA tag titles they lost back in November at K-Cup. The win was a controversial one, considering The Sensations went immediately to ECWA official Joe Zanolle, at ringside, complaining that they had made a tag and the legal man was not pinned.

Regardless of the dubious nature of Referee Mike Kehner’s decision (and all referee decisions are FINAL), Fusion-DS were more-than-happy to gloat. “We’ve been saying for months that we were the better team,” smirked Damian Dragon. “But nobody would listen. Not the followers at ringside, those idiots we were in the ring with, nor the matchmakers. Nobody believed us. But tonight we showed them.”

Fortunately for ANOTHER ECWA champion – Heavyweight Champion Papadon – the night ended on a much better note, with another thrilling, 30+ minute defense, heading into his attempt at winning the 2012 ECWA Super 8 tournament, April 7th in Newark.

“For me, it was just another night at the office,” said Papadon, sitting in the back with a towel over his head.” And when I have another night at the office NEXT MONTH in Delaware, I’ll have the Super 8 trophy in my possession as well.”

While hiss challenger #1 Johnny Silver came out on the losing end on this night (despite some assistance from his Slophunters tag partner Alex Reynolds, who prevented Papadon from hitting Silver with the ECWA belt when referee John Finegan was knocked out), his partner Reynolds actually had a fantastic outing against TNA’s own Anthony Nese, who made his return to the ECWA for the first time since competing in the 2008 Super 8 as Maverick, defeating him in a 17 minute battle.

In addition, ECWA proudly showcased the North American debut of Shazza McKenzie, an up-and-coming Australian wrestler many feel will soon be ranked among the top women’s wrestlers in the world. McKenzie looked amazing in her defeat of Kylie Pierce, an independent wrestling star already familiar with the ECWA ring after battling Veda Scott last year.

In other action on the show, “The Sensei” Paul Lopresti defeated Mr. Ooh La La w/ Coach Jim Shorts in an impromptu wrestling match, after their Martial Arts Exhibition broke down into a fight, Corey Blaze continued to make enemies of his former fans and allies when he defeated a debuting Kid U-S-A, the young protégé of Blaze’s former partner Kid America, and featured 2012 Super 8 competitors Bandido Jr. and Azrieal made short work of The Magnum Modeling Agency’s Danny E and Ricky “The Model” Martinez w/ Gus Grand.

Complete results were as follows:

East Coast Wrestling Association, Newark, DEShane Strickland defeated Alex Payne [7:14] … Bandido Jr. and Azrieal defeated The Magnum Modeling Agency, Danny E and Ricky “The Model” Martinez (with Gus Grand) [8:13] … Shazza McKenzie pinned Kylie Pierce [6:21] … “Greatest American Hero” Corey Blaze defeated Kid U-S-A [3:33] … Alex Reynolds defeated Tony Nese [17:12] … “The Sensei” Paul Lopresti battled Mr. Ooh La La (with “Coach” Jim Shorts) to a no-contest in a Martial Arts Challenge and Exhibition, then won an impromptu wrestling match … Fusion-DS defeated ECWA Tag Champions The Midnight Sensations [12:10] to win the titles and become 2-time champions… Team Black Heart (Bobby Shields, Breaker Morant, and Josh Daniels, with Joel “Blackhart“ Goodhart) defeated Team ECWA (Chris Wylde, Kekoa The Flyin Hawaiian, and AHTU) [13:10] in a no-disqualification match … ECWA Heavyweight Champion “The Greek God” Papadon pinned Johnny Silver (with Alex Reynolds) [31:10] to retain his title.(03/03/2012)

FUSION DS & MIDNIGHT SENSATIONS SPEAK ABOUT RECENT EVENTS (video)

Matt Saigon and Damian Dragon, known collectively as FUSION DS, won the Tri-State Wrestling Alliance (TWA) Tag Team Titles from the Best Around, Bruce Maxwell and TJ Cannon, in January 2011 in Voorhees, NJ.

In May 2011, FUSION DS defeated Christopher Rockwell and Sam Shields, the Midnight Sensations, for the vacant ECWA Tag Team Tiles and also to unify both the TWA and ECWA Tag Team Championships to become the first ECWA/TWA Unified Tag Team Champions.

FUSION DS defended the championships throughout 2011 and were ranked the number 10 tag team in the world several weeks by Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) Magazine online at www.pwi-online.com.  This marked the first time ever that any ECWA champion(s) had ever been ranked in the PWI overall top ten, which is usually reserved for WWE, TNA, NWA and international wrestlers.

FUSION DS’s title reign ended at the ECWA K-CUP Tag Team Tournamentin Newark, DE in Nov 2011 when they were defeated by Asylum and Matt Burns, the Flatliners, in the quarter-final round.  The Flatliners then lost the championship to the Matt & Bryan Logan in the semi-finals.  The Midnight Sensations, old rivals of FUSION DS, then defeated the Logan Brothers in the finals for the Unified Tag Team Title and the K-CUP trophy.

Following their loss at the K-CUP, FUSION felt slighted by the fans who began to rally behind the Midnight Sensations and voted the Sensations ECWA Tag Team, Match and Moment of the Year in ECWA’s Year End Awards in on-line voting.

In January 2012, FUSION DS saved the Midnight Sensations after the Sensations defeated the Nigerian Nightmares in a very tough title defense and a brutal post match attack by the Nightmares.  After chasing the Nightmares off with chairs, FUSION helped the Sensations back to their feet only to brutally attack them with a series a chair shots!!!

With the roles now reversed, and the Sensations now the favorite of the ECWA fans, FUSION DS has vowed their new attitude will lead them to become the first ever 2-time Unified ECWA Tag Team Champions. However, the defending champions, who bill themselves as time traveling, karate aliens from the Triton Moon sent from the future to save tag team wrestling, say different and promise to send FUSION DS away empty-handed.

The Midnight Sensations have 2 title defenses scheduled against FUSION DS, first at ECWA SPRING BATTLE!, Mar 3, 2012 in Newark, Delaware and then at the YMCA of Salem County, Mar 10, 2012 in Carney’s Point, NJ.

TWA TITLE NOW RECOGNIZED BY ECWA

Since TWA Heavyweight Champion and the self-proclaimed REAL Champion Breaker Morant insists carrying around the TWA belt with him, ECWA has decided to officially recognized the championship! Ever since that announcement was made, the response from members of the roster looking for a shot has been overwhelming, and from both sides of the dressing rooms!!! AHTU has his first shot on Mar 10th, but Chris Wylde, Kekoa, Aden Chambers, Chris Rockwell, Sam Shields, Cole Callaway, Corey Blaze, Damian Dragon, Matt Saigon, Johnny Silver, Alex Reynolds, CUJO and even Mr. Ooh La La all want a piece of Breaker!!! Huh, go figure, Blackheart is not too popular in the locker room! Breaker is going to have to be every bit as good as he says he is to fend off this onslaught of challengers!!!

16th ANNUAL ECWA SUPER 8 IS COMING SAT, APRIL 7, 2012 to NEWARK, DELAWARE, FIRST 3 COMPETITORS ANNOUNCED

The East Coast Wrestling Association’s (ECWA) annual Super 8 Tournament is the oldest and most recognized pro wrestling tournament in the United States. The inaugural tournament took place in 1997 and gave many of today’s stars their first big break on the East Coast including Daniel Bryan (aka Bryan Danielson, American Dragon), Christopher Daniels, Austin Aries, the Hardy Boyz and many more. Each year, Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) magazine has recognized and covered the tournament in depth. Many of today’s top independent stars in the United States and abroad grew up reading about the Super 8 in PWI magazine and were inspired by the prospect of one day competing in the Super 8 and fulfilling their dreams of being a professional wrestler! The tournament also inspired pro hopefuls who otherwise might have been considered too small to be a pro as the tournament has highlighted the junior heavyweight style.

In 2011, for the first time ever, the Super 8 Tournament was held outside of Delaware and took place in Voorhees, NJ at the Flyers Skate Zone.

This year, April 7th 2012, the Super 8 comes home to the Greater Newark Boys & Girls Club in Newark, DE*, Bell Time 7 PM, which hosted the tournament from 2005-2010. They tournament was held at Saint Matthews Parish Hall in Wilmington, Delaware from 1997-2004!

Last year’s Super 8 (2011) saw Tommaso Ciampa emerge victorious after reaching the finals in 2009 and 2010, when he defeated 2010 Wrestling Observer Newsletter Rookie of the Year, Adam Cole, in a stellar battle. Since then, Ciampa has been on an undefeated streak at Ring of Honor (ROH) wrestling. Also, Austin Aries, at a cross roads in his career, returned to the tournament that gave him his first national exposure in 2004. Since then, Aries has gone on to be a full-time performer at TNA IMPACT! Wrestling. Shiima Xion (aka Zema Ion) has gone on to TNA IMPACT! Wrestling following last year’s Super 8.

This year, with the Super 8 Tournament returning home to Delaware, a whole new field of 8 competitors are looking to make a big name for themselves in hopes of future national success, as some so many past Super 8 performers have experienced. First competitor in the 16th Annual ECWA Super 8 on April 7th is the current reigning ECWA Heavyweight Champion, the “Greek God” Papadon. Papadon earned his spot in the tournament in a match against 2011 winner Tommaso Ciampa. Papadon defeated Ciampa on September 24, 2011 in Newark, Delaware at the 44th Anniversary show where it was the ECWA Title vs. an automatic spot in the Super 8. Papadon, a 12 year veteran of the sport and the East Coast independent circuit won the ECWA Heavyweight Championship his second night in the company when he defeated crowd favorite, the giant MEGA on March 5th, 2011 in Newark, Delaware and is undefeated in the ECWA! Since that time Papadon has defeated many greater challengers and many which were deemed ECWA Match of the Year candidates in its 2011 Year End Awards on-line poll including title defenses against Tommaso Ciampa,#1 Johnny Silver, Alex Reynolds, “Heart Killer” Chris Wylde, Chase Del Monte, Matt Saigon and more! Papadon was also voted by the fans of the 2011 ECWA as Wrestler of the Year. Papadon also has tournament experience as he participated in the 2011 Jeff Peterson Cup and has won the New York Wrestling Connection (NYWC) Master of the Mat twice. He is also a former NYWC Heavyweight Champion and also former NYWC FUSION Champion. While being one of the most hated men in ECWA history, ECWA faithful fans recognize and appreciate the skill he possesses.

Second competitor entered in this year’s field of 8, is the current ECWA Mid-Atlantic Champion, Kekoa the Flyin Hawaiian! Kekoa is a 5 year pro who after much success in the Lehigh Valley area independent wrestling promotions, Kekoa the Flyin Hawaiian debuted for the ECWA March 5th, 2011 and has taken the promotion by storm. Kekoa has consistently been a part of some of the best matches in ECWA in 2011 including bouts against Chris Wylde, Jonathan Gresham, Ricky “the Model” Martinez and two incredible matches with Adam Cole, the second of which was called Match of the Year by many ECWA fans. On Nov 19th, 2011, Kekoa captured his first ECWA championship when he won the ECWA Mid-Atlantic Title from “Heart Killer” Chris Wylde, who had held the championship for nearly a year and had only suffered two losses previously in ECWA to Tommaso Ciampa and “Greek God” Papadon. Kekoa, with all his momentum from an impressive 2011, heads toward the Super 8 Tournament looking to use the prestige of winning the tournament to catapult him to the next level. As a note of trivia, this is the first time in ECWA SUPER 8 history that both the Heavyweight and Mid-Atlantic champions have been entered into the tournament. Will both Papadon & Kekoa make it to the SUPER 8 with both their title reigns still intact?

The third competitor entered into the Super 8 this year is Bobby Fish!!! Bobby is a 9 year pro who was trained by Tony DeVito & LEGENDARY WWE Hall of Famer and 7-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion, Harley Race!!! Bobby works EVOLVE and other Northeast independent promotions stateside and is a regular in Japan for the NOAH promotion. Bobby has tournament experience as he was a participant in the 2011 Global League Tournament in Japan (NOAH) and was also a finalist in the Jeff Peterson Cup 2011 in Florida (FIP). On Saturday night, January 14, 2012, Bobby wrestled what was billed as the last pro wrestling event at the ECW Arena before renovations as he defeated Sami Callihan via submission for EVOLVE. Bobby is one of the most impressive pure grapplers today, a top athlete and definitely deserves to compete in the SUPER 8!!! The remaining five remaining competitors in the Super 8 will be announced in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!
