(04/07/12)

Newark,Delaware, April 7, 2012–“The Greek God” Papadon made East Coast Wrestling Association (ECWA) history at the 16th annual ECWA Super 8 tournament tonight, pinning TNA star Anthony Nese, Bobby Fish, and Bandido Jr in one evening to become the first man to walk into – and win – the tournament as ECWA Heavyweight Champion.

Previously, “The Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels won Super 8 as champion, but only after winning the title during the course of the tournament.
“I’m honored, but not surprised,” smiled the man once so hated – but tonight cheered – by the ECWA faithful. “I did exactly as I said … and KNEW I would. Now I only hope the wrestling world was taking notice, as they have so many times in the past.”

The road was a difficult one for The Greek God, who had to defeat one of TNA’s fastest-rising X division stars, in Nese, in the first round.

Round One – Papadon vs. Anthony Nese
Papadon’s first-round match against TNA star Anthony Nese was a very hard-fought battle, and one that did not leave him unaffected. After sustaining a series of brutal suplexes, kneelifts, and a punishing 450 Splash from the top rope, Papadon was able to catch his fellow New Yorker off-guard, quickly pinning him after a running European-style dropkick in just over 11 minutes. For the big TNA television star, the night was already over. For Papadon, however, a long and dificult journey was only just beginning. It was now on to the second round, where Papadon would be forced to contend with the internationally savvy Bobby Fish.

Round Two – Papadon vs. Bobby Fish
No handshakes, and apparently no respect by Fish, who rejected an attempted show of respect by the usually hated champ, just prior to punishing him with  suplexes and a springboard moonsault off the apron. In the end, it was another running dropkick’ this time to the back of Fish’s head at the 15 minute mark that was enough to bring this match to an end, and to propel Papadon into the finals.

Unfortunately for Papadon, the final round of the Super 8 tournament presented its own set of challenges, in the form of luchadore Bandido Jr, brandishing traditional lucha mask in honor of his father at ringside.

Round Three – Papadon vs. Bandido Jr
With Bandido Sr watching on from his ringside seat, Bandido Jr turned in the fight of his life against Papadon, punishing him with aerial maneuver after aerial maneuver before he fell victim to a Papadon piledriver.
With trophy standing beside the very proud Greek God, Papadon could do little but gleam as he looked back on the milestone he had just achieved. After holding both the Super 8 trophy AND ECWA Heavyweight title high above his head as the standing crowd and all of his tournament peers looked on, Papadon grabbed the microphone and exclaimed, “For years, I’ve wanted this tournament so bad. It’s such a great pleasure, the fans are some of the greatest and most loyal fans in independent wrestling today. Thank you so much to all of you who helped make this possible for me.”

In other opening round tournament matches, Bamdido Jr pinned his tag partner Azrieal, Gregory Iron defeated Kyle Matthews and Bobby Fish forced Kekoa The Flyin Hawaiian to submit to a leglock submission, after working over his knee for more than 10 minutes. One additional second-round matchup saw Bandido taken to the limit by Gregory Iron, only to come out on top in the end.

In addition, longtime ECWA veteran – and perrenial underdog – Mr. Ooh La La shocked most of his fellow locker-room mates and fans by winnng a Royal Rumble-style invitational battle royal, last eliminating the owner of the ECWA, Mike Tartaglia. Ooh La La, who emerged from the backstage as the #3 entrant, immediately fainted when left alone in the ring with both members of The Nigerian Nightmares. After being revived, he would later slide under the bottom rope to come to the aid of his manager, “Coach” Jim Shorts, who was injured when Ooh La La bumped into him and knocked him out of the ring after being intimidated by AHTU. During that time, the match was seemingly won by newcomer Mustafa Aziz, at which time Tartaglia emerged from the back and paid him to eliminate himself from the match. In his arrogance, Tartaglia totally forgot about Ooh La La, who was still at ringside and was able to sweep in to toss the former Hitman over the top rope, and earn a shot for hmself  at any title in the ECWA, on any date of his choosing.

In other action, reigning ECWA Tag Champions The Midnight Sensations successfully retained their titles with a big Triple-Threat match win over former champions The Flatliners and Fusion-DS. With Fusion, The Sensations, and Flatliner Burns laid out outside the ring after a Burns suicide dive, Asylum found himself the victim of a brutal assault by the massive Nigerian Nightmares, as the crowd watched on in horror. Never ones to let bygones be bygones, Asylum and Burns would make an appearance later in the night during the Invitational Battle Royal, to return the fight back to The Nightmares and get some vengeance, costing them the match.

I can’t wait for this year’s East Coast Wrestling Association SUPER 8 TOURNAMENT! This year is the 16th Annual edition. It is the oldest, most recognized and most covered tournament of its kind. It has served as a platform to many future stars. But to clarify, the Super 8 is not about Joe Zanolle or Mike Tartaglia or founder Jim Kettner or the ECWA itself. It is about 8 professional wrestlers looking to prove they are the best of the best. Looking to prove that professional wrestling is still alive, that there are new stars waiting to break through, that there are new stars ready and able to have the torch passed to them and to help carry on the tradition of this business into the future and beyond. This year’s participants “Greek God” Papadon, Kekoa the Flyin Hawaiian, Bobby Fish, AMAZING RED, Azrieal, Gregory Iron, Kyle Matthews and Bandido Jr all have different levels of experience and exposure and all bring their unique talents and skills to the table this year. Like any competition, there is only one winner, but as a collective field of 8, there are no losers here. There are 8 winners! I am proud to serve as the caretaker of this event and promise to do my best to help maintain this tradition. Make sure you check out the Super 8 on Apr 7, 2012 in Newark, Delaware, PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING the way YOU remember it! RED OUT, NESE IN SUPER 8 THIS SAT, APR 7th (3 days away)!!!

Amazing Red informed ECWA matchmaker Joe Zanolle on Saturday, March 31st that he would be unable to attend and compete in the 16th Annual Super 8 on April 7th, citing a family emergency he needed to tend to. ECWA sends Red and his family best wishes.

Replacing Red is TNA IMPACT! Wrestling Star Tony Nese!!! Tony had a great series of matches with 2011 Super 8 semi-finalist Shiima Xion (now Zema Ion) on IMPACT! and also recently had a match vs Austin Aries vs Zema Ion vs Kid Kash!

Tony was also a 2008 ECWA Super 8 semi-finalist where he competed as Maverick.

Nese has been a standout at New York Wrestling Connection (NYWC), ROH, EVOLVE, DG-USA and many other Northeast independents!

“I apologize to the ECWA fans for this inconvenience,” said Zanolle. “As much as I was looking forward to see Red compete in the Super 8 as he did in 2002, I fully understand that family comes first and hope he and his family are OK. Having said that, the Super 8 is not about one person, but rather a spirit, an ideal of giving exposure and a platform to a new generation of performers and giving the fans the very best wrestling today.”

“Tony Nese is a great fit for the tournament and we are lucky to have him. Nese knows all about the Super 8, having competed in the 2008 edition, and jumped at the chance to win the trophy that eluded him 4 years ago.”

“ECWA fans were recently treated to a great match on March 3rd in Newark, Delaware as Nese took on Alex Reynolds,” Zanolle continued. “Many of our fans loved Nese and requested his return. One door closes, another opens. Needless to say, Tony belongs in the Super 8 and I look forward to all that he brings to the table.”

Former East Coast Wrestling Association (ECWA) Unified Tag Team Champions Matt Saigon & Damian Dragon, known as FUSION DS, were recently featured in a music video, “Lucha Libre” by Italian rock band NUV.

Saigon and Dragon won the Tri-State Wrestling Alliance (TWA) Tag Team Titles from the Best Around, Bruce Maxwell and TJ Cannon, in January 2011 in Voorhees, NJ.
In May 2011, FUSION DS defeated Christopher Rockwell and Sam Shields, the Midnight Sensations, for the vacant ECWA Tag Team Tiles and also to unify both the TWA and ECWA Tag Team Championships to become the first ECWA/TWA Unified Tag Team Champions.
FUSION DS defended the championships throughout 2011 and were ranked the number 10 tag team in the world several weeks by Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) Magazine online at  This marked the first time ever that any ECWA champion(s) had ever been ranked in the PWI overall top ten, which is usually reserved for WWE, TNA, NWA and international wrestlers.
FUSION DS’s title reign ended at the ECWA K-CUP Tag Team Tournament in Newark, DE in Nov 2011 when they were defeated by Asylum and Matt Burns, the Flatliners, in the quarter-final round.  The Flatliners then lost the championship to the Matt & Bryan Logan in the semi-finals.  The Midnight Sensations, old rivals of FUSION DS, then defeated the Logan Brothers in the finals for the Unified Tag Team Title and the K-CUP trophy.
Following their loss at the K-CUP, FUSION felt slighted by the fans who began to rally behind the Midnight Sensations and voted the Sensations ECWA Tag Team, Match and Moment of the Year in ECWA’s Year End Awards in on-line voting.
In January 2012, FUSION DS saved the Midnight Sensations after the Sensations defeated the Nigerian Nightmares in a very tough title defense and a brutal post match attack by the Nightmares.  After chasing the Nightmares off with chairs, FUSION helped the Sensations back to their feet only to brutally attack them with a series a chair shots!!!
With the roles now reversed, and the Sensations now the favorite of the ECWA fans, FUSION DS has vowed their new attitude will lead them to become the first ever 2-time Unified ECWA Tag Team Champions. However, the defending champions, who bill themselves as time traveling, karate aliens from the Triton Moon sent from the future to save tag team wrestling, say different and promise to send FUSION DS away empty-handed.
The Midnight Sensations have 2 title defenses scheduled against FUSION DS, first at ECWA SPRING BATTLE!, Mar 3, 2012 in Newark, Delaware and then at the YMCA of Salem County, Mar 10, 2012 in Carney’s Point, NJ.

"Handicapped Hero" Gregory Iron has been entered into the 16th Annual ECWA SUPER 8!!!

Gregory Iron was the first runner up for the 2011 Inspirational Wrestler of the Year in PWI Magazine (March 2012 Issue)

Greg’s Story…

Born with cerebral palsy, Iron had a rough childhood as he was often ridiculed for it by peers and classmates.  Iron did share a close bond though with his grandmother, who first got him interested in pro wrestling and developed a common love of wrestling.  Sadly, Iron lost his grandmother to bone cancer in 1995.  Iron also had a tough home life as his mother became addicted to drugs and alcohol, which resulted in emotional and even financial woes and, ultimately, led to the passing of his mother from a drug overdose.

Despite all of these obstacles, the one thing that occupied Greg’s mind and motivated him was his love of pro wrestling.

Greg always wanted to be a part of wrestling, though he never thought he could actually be a wrestler.  That changed when he saw one legged wrestler Zach Gowen perform in 2003.  Greg  slowly began to get hope that maybe he too could live his lifelong dream.
In 2006, at 19, Greg began to make that dream a reality, and had his 1st match in July, 2006.   Greg has not looked back since, always trying to improve and better himself.
Greg wears handicapped symbols all over his gear, because not only is it a distinguishable symbol, but it’s a powerful symbol.  Greg says, “To most, the handicapped symbol represents weakness and shame, but I want to make people look at it and see strength, and inspiration… to know any dream is possible to attain, no matter who you are.”

WWE Champion CM Punk and Colt Cabana endorse Gregory Iron!!!(Warning!! Foul Language)

“ECWA … become a fan all over again!”

The East Coast Wrestling Association’s (ECWA) annual Super 8 Tournament is the oldest and most recognized pro wrestling tournament in the United States. The inaugural tournament took place in 1997 and gave many of today’s stars their first big break on the East Coast including Daniel Bryan (aka Bryan Danielson, American Dragon), Christopher Daniels, Austin Aries, the Hardy Boyz and many more. Each year, Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) magazine has recognized and covered the tournament in depth. Many of today’s top independent stars in the United States and abroad grew up reading about the Super 8 in PWI magazine and were inspired by the prospect of one day competing in the Super 8 and fulfilling their dreams of being a professional wrestler! The tournament also inspired pro hopefuls who otherwise might have been considered too small to be a pro as the tournament has highlighted the junior heavyweight style.

In 2011, for the first time ever, the Super 8 Tournament was held outside of Delaware and took place in Voorhees, NJ at the Flyers Skate Zone.

This year, April 7th 2012, the Super 8 comes home to the Greater Newark Boys & Girls Club in Newark, DE*, Bell Time 7 PM, which hosted the tournament from 2005-2010. They tournament was held at Saint Matthews Parish Hall in Wilmington, Delaware from 1997-2004!

Last year’s Super 8 (2011) saw Tommaso Ciampa emerge victorious after reaching the finals in 2009 and 2010, when he defeated 2010 Wrestling Observer Newsletter Rookie of the Year, Adam Cole, in a stellar battle. Since then, Ciampa has been on an undefeated streak at Ring of Honor (ROH) wrestling. Also, Austin Aries, at a cross roads in his career, returned to the tournament that gave him his first national exposure in 2004. Since then, Aries has gone on to be a full-time performer at TNA IMPACT! Wrestling. Shiima Xion (aka Zema Ion) has gone on to TNA IMPACT! Wrestling following last year’s Super 8.

This year, with the Super 8 Tournament returning home to Delaware, a whole new field of 8 competitors are looking to make a big name for themselves in hopes of future national success, as some so many past Super 8 performers have experienced. First competitor in the 16th Annual ECWA Super 8 on April 7th is the current reigning ECWA Heavyweight Champion, the “Greek God” Papadon. Papadon earned his spot in the tournament in a match against 2011 winner Tommaso Ciampa. Papadon defeated Ciampa on September 24, 2011 in Newark, Delaware at the 44th Anniversary show where it was the ECWA Title vs. an automatic spot in the Super 8. Papadon, a 12 year veteran of the sport and the East Coast independent circuit won the ECWA Heavyweight Championship his second night in the company when he defeated crowd favorite, the giant MEGA on March 5th, 2011 in Newark, Delaware and is undefeated in the ECWA! Since that time Papadon has defeated many greater challengers and many which were deemed ECWA Match of the Year candidates in its 2011 Year End Awards on-line poll including title defenses against Tommaso Ciampa,#1 Johnny Silver, Alex Reynolds, “Heart Killer” Chris Wylde, Chase Del Monte, Matt Saigon and more! Papadon was also voted by the fans of the 2011 ECWA as Wrestler of the Year. Papadon also has tournament experience as he participated in the 2011 Jeff Peterson Cup and has won the New York Wrestling Connection (NYWC) Master of the Mat twice. He is also a former NYWC Heavyweight Champion and also former NYWC FUSION Champion. While being one of the most hated men in ECWA history, ECWA faithful fans recognize and appreciate the skill he possesses.

Second competitor entered in this year’s field of 8, is the current ECWA Mid-Atlantic Champion, Kekoa the Flyin Hawaiian! Kekoa is a 5 year pro who after much success in the Lehigh Valley area independent wrestling promotions, Kekoa the Flyin Hawaiian debuted for the ECWA March 5th, 2011 and has taken the promotion by storm. Kekoa has consistently been a part of some of the best matches in ECWA in 2011 including bouts against Chris Wylde, Jonathan Gresham, Ricky “the Model” Martinez and two incredible matches with Adam Cole, the second of which was called Match of the Year by many ECWA fans. On Nov 19th, 2011, Kekoa captured his first ECWA championship when he won the ECWA Mid-Atlantic Title from “Heart Killer” Chris Wylde, who had held the championship for nearly a year and had only suffered two losses previously in ECWA to Tommaso Ciampa and “Greek God” Papadon. Kekoa, with all his momentum from an impressive 2011, heads toward the Super 8 Tournament looking to use the prestige of winning the tournament to catapult him to the next level. As a note of trivia, this is the first time in ECWA SUPER 8 history that both the Heavyweight and Mid-Atlantic champions have been entered into the tournament. Will both Papadon & Kekoa make it to the SUPER 8 with both their title reigns still intact?

The third competitor entered into the Super 8 this year is Bobby Fish!!! Bobby is a 9 year pro who was trained by Tony DeVito & LEGENDARY WWE Hall of Famer and 7-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion, Harley Race!!! Bobby works EVOLVE and other Northeast independent promotions stateside and is a regular in Japan for the NOAH promotion. Bobby has tournament experience as he was a participant in the 2011 Global League Tournament in Japan (NOAH) and was also a finalist in the Jeff Peterson Cup 2011 in Florida (FIP). On Saturday night, January 14, 2012, Bobby wrestled what was billed as the last pro wrestling event at the ECW Arena before renovations as he defeated Sami Callihan via submission for EVOLVE. Bobby is one of the most impressive pure grapplers today, a top athlete and definitely deserves to compete in the SUPER 8!!! The remaining five remaining competitors in the Super 8 will be announced in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!
