ECWA ‘Witching Hour’- October 20, 2012- Sports & More- Sewell, NJ

ECWA invaded Sports & More in Sewell, NJ, the first time ECWA hosted an event in the South Jersey/Philly area in over a year! The night certainly had some interesting match-ups and some colorful characters to surprise the fans with. How did the show turn out in the hometown of ECWA owner “The Boss” Mike Tartaglia? Read on for a detailed recap of ‘Witching Hour’!

Match 1: “The Last Warrior” Greywolf defeated Cujo the Hellhound– Right off the bat everyone knew this wouldn’t would a battle of technical prowess but instead a showcase of power and old school ground-and-pound wrestling. Cujo came into this match-up extremely grumpy and bad tempered fresh off of two straight losses to ECWA newcomerNapalm Bomb. Greywolf, however, hasn’t been seen since the 2012 Super 8 when he put on an impressive showing in the Annual Summit Battle Royal. Fans were shocked to see Greywolf enter the arena in full battle attire complete with battle axe and horned helmet! That immediately irritated Cujo who was out to show his luck was about to change. The match itself was exactly what it promised to be. Cujo got the upper hand for most of this fight utilizing numerous blows to the head and back along with some well-placed clotheslines and powerslams. The crowd, supporting the barbarian, would not let “The Last Warrior” fall! Backed by his trademark “HARUMPH” chants, Greywolf fought his way back from the brink of defeat! Cujo was shocked at this burst of strength and was soon reeling from a flurry of powerful shoulder blocks and lariats. The prospect of a loss eventually got the best of Cujo as when the referee’s back was turned, he grabbed the metal chains he wears to the ring and charged at Greywolf in the corner! Sensing the attack, Greywolf shuffled out of the way causing Cujo to slam hard into the turnbuckle. As the vet stumbled out of the corner, Greywolf took advantage of the situation and hit a thunderous twisting powerslam for the pinfall! The painted warrior happily led the crowd in a huge battle cry as he was victorious!

Match 2: ECWA Unified Tag Team Championship: The Dream Team (Aden Chambers & Kekoa the Flyin’ Hawaiian) defeats Fusion DS (Damian Dragon & Matt Saigon) and The Midnight Sensations (Chris Rockwell & Sam Shields)  w/Joel Blackhart to become new tag team champions– The next match was a promising triple threat match for the tag team championship. The crowd was spilt on who to cheer for as the match begun. Early and often the former 3 time tag champions Fusion DS had the upper hand. There’s been dysfunction lately in the ranks of Fusion DS as Damian Dragon quickly made a statement on who was the better man as he systemically wore downSam Shields of the Sensations. Dragon’s almost 20 years of experience led him to use suplexes, submissions, and overall big time moves like yakuza kicks getting numerous near falls as he looked to put the match away early.Matt Saigon, not to be outdone, looked to prove power and youth are superior over experience as he entered immediately with a devastating vertical suplex and knee lift. The reigning tag champs would battle back much to the delight of those in attendance. Shields and Rockwell, always the well-oiled machine, got the upper hand and made sure to do quick tags in-and-out to wear down the powerfulSaigon. The two teams were involved in a bitter rivalry over the last year or so and it spilled over once again. Back and forth the see saw went as Fusion and the Sensations battled all over the ring and onto the floor. Mostly idle up to this point, the Dream Team’s fun loving attitude got a few laughs and awes asKekoa the Flyin’ Hawaiian landed an amazing diving senton over the top rope onto the 4 men on the floor. Jumping into the ring to back-up his partnerAden Chambers then got a few ‘oohs and ahhs’ of his own as he hit a perfectly executed springboard moonsault also crashing into everyone on the floor. The crowd erupted into a frenzy behind the 2012 K-Cup champions as the Dream Team looked to gain momentum. As bodies were laid everywhere, things got chaotic. All 3 teams took turns hitting each other with what they thought were finishing maneuvers. Fusion hit their Fusion Destroyer for only a near fall. The Sensations hit their cross body block- suplex combo off the turnbuckle for a near fall. But finally, push came to shove. Damian Dragon knocked Rockwell from the ring and turned right intoKekoa who hit the Hawaiian 5-0 slam on him leaving Shields to fight by himself. Dazed Shields was easy prey as Chambers hit him with a beautiful blockbuster off ofKekoa’s shoulders for the 1…2…3! We had NEW ECWA Unified Tag Team Champions! Joel Blackhart was disgusted with his clients as they lay helpless on the outside and continued to berate them back into the locker room. Damian Dragon was infuriated with another loss. He them stormed out on his partner further creating a rift in Fusion DS. Victorious the Dream Team showcased why they are currently the team to beat in ECWA and the most dominant to boot. First K-Cup Champions then Tag Team Champions! The fans are sorely behind this exciting new team as they surge forward!

Match 3: Shockwave the Robot defeats Jean Jean Lebon– Being the most curious match-up in ECWA history, management or the fans didn’t know what to expect here. What they got will surely go down as one of the most “Ultra Hardcore” moments in the 45 year history of the ECWA. AsShockwave entered, kids especially couldn’t help but smile as he did his breakdancing, robotic routine. Jean-Jean, however, was not impressed. Utilizing mime techniques he learned inParis, he tried to outwitShockwave who had no idea what to make of this new enemy. The Mime got the upper hand at first with various questionable tactics and technical wrestling.Shockwave would fight back with robot clotheslines and his trademark shuffle leg drop. The resistant LeBon refused to be finished off. Much to the shock ofShockwave and refMike Kehner Jean-Jean pulled an invisible “knife” from his sock and immediately threatened to “stab” anyone in the ring! Kehner was horrified running around the ring to get away from the suddenly vicious Frenchman. Battling for the “knife” back and forthShockwave eventually accidentally “stabbed” Jean-Jean in the chest! After a very dramatic death sequence,Shockwave tried to make the pinfall but it was only a two count. Jean-Jean would gain the upper hand for a second as he then pulled a “handgun” from his belt buckle! This time he meant business! Once again scaring everyone in the ring, the crowd erupted in laughter at this obviously silly scenario.Shockwave wouldn’t have any of it as he kicked the “handgun” up into the air, as both…. men? … scrambled to get the weapon.Shockwave would eventually gain control as it went off! The “handgun” shot Jean-Jean LeBon right into the chest! Thinking this could be it,Shockwave pinned the mime only for him once again to kick out at two! Sensing this needed to end, the robot climbed to the tope rope to deliver his patented Guillotine Leg Drop. Jean-Jean would move out of the way causingShockwave to miss! This time, the mime’s intentions turned murderous! Slipping out of the ring, he looked under the ring for a weapon. Thinking he was going for a chair or possibly a table, the fans were flabbergasted as LeBon pulled out a big time weapon in a “double-barrel” shotgun! Entering the ring, he pointed it at the fans and turned to findShockwave ready this time as they struggled back and forth over the “gun”.Shockwave grabbed the gun and wasted no time in “shooting” Jean-Jean! As he lay still,Shockwave climbed the top turnbuckle and delivered his Guillotine Leg Drop for the pinfall! The fans cheered as he invited them to enter the ring and dance with him, celebrating his victory! The kids wanted to get some of the fallen mime too as they stomped and kicked Jean-Jean! The ring crew put a white sheet over LeBon as they carried him out on a “stretcher”.

Match 4: “Greek God” Papadon & Tony Mamaluke battle to a Time Limit Draw- Tagged as “Greece vs. Italy” this pitted two of the best technical wrestlers on the independent scene in the world!Papadon called for a mic and expressed his appreciation for all the things Mamaluke has done in his career. When he extended his hand in a sign of respect, Mamaluke refused. He obviously had the former champion well scouted. The match started exactly as it was billed. Both men showcased their amazing chain wrestling skills for the crowd with a tie eventually being obvious. Then things got ugly asPapadon’s famous temper took over.Papadon used his power to ground the fast paced Italian quickly delivering brutal elbows to the shoulders of Mamaluke. Mamaluke would fight back with a belly to belly suplex and spinning kicks. The crowd quickly got behind the former WWE star as his intensity picked up. Back and forth both men traded glancing, powerful blows with neither man gaining a decisive advantage. The former ECWA champ though gained the upper hand even hitting Mamaluke with a Alpha-Omega Shining Wizard but it was to no avail.Papadon, looking for that something extra, climbed to the top rope and attempted a diving headbutt… he would miss! Mamaluke went on the attack with stiff kicks to the face and thigh even causingPapadon to be busted open above the eye! Working on the “Greek God’s” lower legs it became apparent Mamaluke would attempt to go the route of ECWA champChris Wylde and use his submission prowess to his advantage.Papadon would try one last burst to get his devastating finisher the Wrath of God but Mamaluke knew he could not let that happen and locked in a fish hook ankle lock.Papadon reversed it only to put back into it right away! As Mamaluke had the fish hook locked in,Papadon struggled to get to the ropes. However, the ref had already called for the bell beforePapadon could submit. The time limit had run out and the match had been declared a draw! With blood gushing,Papadon quickly retreated for medical attention but the feisty Italian remained to a chorus of cheers and respect from the fans.

Match 5: “The Boss” Mike Tartaglia, Ricky “The Model” Martinez, & Little Mikey defeats Kid USA, Kid America, & ECWA Mid Atlantic Title Meisure Ooh La La– The fans were especially excited to see this one as Tartaglia was in hometown! The crowd greeted him with a mixed response of cheers and boos as he paraded around the ring spouting his trademark ‘Wooo” reminiscent of the legendary Ric Flair even donning a maroon robe with complete with feather boa. Starting things off Tartaglia strutted as he through a headlock and shoulder block on Kid USA. Unfortunately for the rookie, it would become a recurring theme. Tagging in and out Team Tartaglia took turns body slamming and stomping Kid USA. As they brutalized the youngster, his teammates tried to get the crowd behind him so he could garner some offense. Things would quickly break down however, as both teams jumped into the ring brawling. Team Ooh La La would win this round dumping ‘The Boss’ and his minions over the top rope. RefereeJohn Finegan would regain control soon enough as Ooh La La and Mikey were the legal men. The Mid Atlantic champ would down the ‘golden boy’ with a low dropkick and bodyslam. With bitter rivals tempers began boiling over… the match would become absolute chaos as Kid America and Kid USA again jumped into the fray. AsMartinez and Mikey battled on the outside, Meisure Ooh La La would get distracted trying to help his teammates. Suddenly, out of nowhere, Little Mikey scored the pinfall on Kid USA! “The Boss” was victorious but the celebration would be short lived as he once again was tossed over the top rope! Toss the Boss! Ooh La La and his friends would then celebrate with the fans as Team Tartaglia whisked away.

Match 6: “Heartkiller” Chris Wylde defeats “Beautiful” Bobby Shields w/Joel Blackhart to retain his Unified Heavyweight Championship– This match was almost a year in the making! It’s well documented the war betweenChris Wylde and the Blackhearts over control of the ECWA. Wylde had fought them off…. or so he thought. The Blackhearts have regrouped and they have their sights set on getting Wylde’s beloved Unified title and ending his boyhood dream early.Bobby Shields is tired of Wylde and his love for the fans. Shields new mentality makes him even more vicious than before. The crowd got behind the champ early as he came out of the gate firing! Wylde used his fighting spirit to stun Shields with various lariats and hard hitting kicks. Joel Blackhart would prove why he is the biggest snake in ECWA as he attempted to help Bobby by grabbing Wylde’s foot. He would then be kicked from ringside by head refereeJohn Finegan who saw it from the get go! Even without his sly manager, Shields would quickly show why he could quite possibly be the deadliest of the Blackhearts as he started to brutalize the defending champion. Screaming at the fans all the while, Shields grounded the “Heartkiller” with powerful offense. The “Beautiful” one slammed Wylde numerous times to the mat with suplexes and different slams intended to hurt and hurt badly. He continued to through Wylde into the corner and hitting a devastating boot to the face. The fans boos finally got to him as he jumped out of the ring yelling at adults even making one kid burst into tears. Returning to the ring, the assault continued as he sensed the end was near and the title within his grasp. Hitting Wylde with an STO, the fans quieted as it looked finished but…. kickout by the champion! Shields became more and more frustrated letting his guard down long enough to hit Bobby with a Sliced Bread #2 for a near fall. Shields would not be denied as he ducked a move by Wylde and hit the champion with his Body Bomb… all looked lost but… a two count only! Getting angrier, Shields went for another Body Bomb but the ‘Heartkiller’ reversed it hitting a flipping powerbomb only to roll through and hit a superkick to the face making it a deadly combo! Wylde quickly made the pin for an amazing victory! Shields would sulk away failing in his bid for the championship as Wylde invited fans into the ring to celebrate with him! Their hero had won and the boyhood dream continues!

ECWA- YMCA III- October 13, 2012- Carney’s Point, NJ

ECWA once again returned to the YMCA of Salem County in Carney’s Point, NJ on October 13, 2012! The night promised to excite the fans and wrestler’s alike as hot match-ups filled the night from top to bottom. What happened in the 3rd visit to the YMCA? Here’s a recap of the night’s action:

Match 1: Napalm Bomb defeated Cujo the Hellhound- Napalm Bomb debuted on the 45th anniversary show and instantly gained the affection of the fans. Despite being beaten down time and time again he came out on top and shocked the veteran Cujo. Not one to be outdone, Cujo demanded a return match where he would punish the Bomb for embarrassing him in front of the ECWA fans on such a big night. The match started with a heavy dose of déjà vu as Cujo used his power and veteran wiles to outsmart the much quicker and younger Napalm Bomb. However, the fans would NOT let the Bomb falter as they continuously willed him to fight back. Using his speed to his advantage, he hit Cujo with an impressive array of moves from an amazing vertical suplex to his patented heel dropkick combo kick. Feeding off the energy of the crowd he once again finished Cujo off with the awe inspiring Swanton Bomb that hit it’s mark perfectly. Once again, Napalm Bomb topped Cujo the Hellhound and proved he’s a top contender in the ECWA. The sky’s the limit for this powerful newcomer who continues to earn the fans love match by match.

Match 2: Jessie Kaye defeated Missy Sampson– ECWA women’s action has really picked up in intensity as of late and this match-up really showed why. The suddenly popular Jessie Kaye looked to continue her momentum as she faced a debuting Missy Sampson. Immediately, Sampson’s cocky attitude drew HUGE jeers and dislike from the crowd as she was not impressed with the feisty Jessie Kaye. Unfortunately for fans of the blonde bombshell Sampson controlled this match from beginning to end. Missy meticulously worked on Kaye’s knee and back with submission moves such as Half Boston Crabs and old fashioned ground and pound moves like a simple body slam. Power and brawn proved to be the deciding factor throughout as the fans could not help Kaye garner any confidence or fire to fight back. As her offense continued to work and weaken her opponent, Missy took her eye off the prize and the resourceful Kaye rolled Missy up for the pin fall! The fans loved the outcome though the ‘Original Ride or Die Chick’ was visibly angry and openly complained to officials about the finish of the match.

– The New Jersey debut of “The Boss’s Chair” promised to be quite an interesting affair as ECWA owner ‘The Boss’ Mike Tartaglia paraded his friends former TWA champion Breaker Morant, Joel Blackhart, Anthony Cicco, and former ECWA champion “Greek God” Papadon in front of a not so pleased crowd. They all continually berated the fans and “their champion” ECWA Unified Heavyweight Champion “Heartkiller” Chris Wylde. The two former champs cooked up quite the plan as they formed an alliance that they said would finally finish off Wylde and his championship reign. Just as the fans couldn’t take anymore Chris Wylde burst onto the scene and proved his fearless attitude is no fluke as he promised the fans they would help him defy the odds once again and retain his Unified title. Not impressed Papadon and Breaker showed their verbal supremacy by continuously attacking Wylde’s credentials and the fans support of him. Sensing it would come to blows, the “Heartkiller” got the jump on the two men and tried to fight them away. The numbers game proved to be too much as they beat down Wylde and stole his championship belts as the final slap in the face of their hated rival. The Main Event looked to become even more personal…

Match 3: Midnight Sensations(Chris Rockwell & Sam Shields) w/ Joel Blackhart retained their tag titles by defeating MMA(Ricky Martinez & Danny E) w/ Magnum &Gus Grand– Ricky Martinez and Danny E were both riding hot streaks going into last month’s K-Cup tag team tournament. The run ended early but not without ECWA officials being very impressed and giving them this tag team title shot. TMS fresh off of getting back into ECWA by any means necessary (employing the help of Joel Blackhart in the process) were looking to prove they never should have left by dominating any team in their way. This match started fast and furious with the MMA getting the early advantage through crisp hit and go tag in-tag out tactics and well… a little help from their cohorts Magnum and Gus Grand. Danny E’s trademark dropkicks and cocky attitude fueled a surprising attack that almost gave the MMA an upset victory. However, it went only go so far as the champions exploded through the adversity and pumped up the crowd with over the top rope dives and powerful clotheslines. Nothing Martinez or Danny E did was to much avail once the aliens got it going thanks to overwhelming support from the crowd. Attempts by Magnum and Gus Grand to save the match fell harmlessly as Rockwell and Shields fully displayed their arsenal of slams and tag team chemistry built traveling the country working on their craft. The end came as the Sensations utilized their neck breaker-side slam finisher that easily sealed the victory for the defending champions.

Match 4: Kekoa the Flyin’ Hawaiian defeated Matt Saigon– Fresh off a hugely disappointing loss in the finals of the K-Cup, Matt Saigon wants to prove he is the stronger link of Fusion DS, even going so far as saying Damian Dragon is the reason they lost in the first place. After a string of shocking losses dating back to the Super 8 Tournament, the “Flyin Hawaiian” came out with confidence and high intensity. Early and often both men proved to be each others equal with back and forth displays of technical and power wrestling. Eventually the stronger Saigon would get the upper hand trying to ground the high flyer with various suplexes, slams, and submissions. Just when another win seemed to slip through his fingers, Kekoa suddenly had a burst of energy and showcased why he was in the Super 8 and why he and Aden Chambers beat Saigon and Dragon just 2 weeks ago in the K-Cup. Furious punches, kicks, dropkicks and quite possibly the most memorable moment of the second half of 2012 in ECWA ensued… Kekoa chased Saigon to the top rope as Matt tried a high impact move and delivered a thunderous, perfectly executed Superplex. The move drew “oohs and ahs” from the fans in attendance and even moved the ring itself several inches out of place! This proved to be the turning point… Saigon would try one last ditch effort to come back and steal the win but Kekoa once again met him on the top rope attempting another high impact move and got the pin fall 1..2..3 after a devastating Super Hawaii 5-0 slam.

Match 5: “Beautiful” Bobby Shields w/ Joel Blackhart defeated Bolo Yung– This was one of the most curious match-ups of the evening. The masked mysterious martial art expert Bolo Yung debuted for the first time in the ECWA. Not much was known about this newcomer as he looked to make a lasting impact. Yung came out early with yakuza kicks and technical moves obviously learned from time in the orient. Shields, however, cut him off from the get go. It what turned into a one sided affair, the “Beautiful” one was not fooled nor impressed by Yung as he slowly picked apart the masked warrior. Sporting an all new look reminiscent of the legendary ‘Nature Boy’ Ric Flair, Shields showcased why he has NOT been pinned or submitted in the last year in the ECWA. No matter what Bolo did, Shields would always have an answer whether it was a well timed boot to the face, gut buster, or his trademark deadly STO. Bobby came out wanting to dominate this entire match as a way of making a statement that his Unified Heavyweight Title match next week on October 20 against Chris Wylde is not to be overlooked. And dominate he did. Even with support from the fans Yung couldn’t fight back forever as Shields finished him off promptly and, much to the disdain of the fans in the YMCA, strutted his way back to the locker room.

Match 6: Shockwave the Robot, Cole Callaway, Meisure Ooh La La, and Coach Jim Shorts defeated ‘The Boss’ Mike Tartaglia, Ricky Martinez, ‘Press Agent’ Gus Grand, and Magnum– The fans were excited for this match mainly because they wanted Shockwave to be the man…er… robot to finally shut up ‘The Boss’ Mike Tartaglia and his “entourage”. Opening the match, Tartaglia got the temporary upper hand with a headlock on Shockwave issuing his annoying ’Woo’ along the way. Mike then tagged in his friend Ricky Martinez to continue the assault. But the former Super 8 competitor wouldn’t be outdone shocking Martinez with a head scissor takedown and an impressive display of breakdance moves. The fun began as ECWA Mid Atlantic champ Meisure Ooh La La donned a Shockwave mask, tagged in, then posed robotically as he faced Martinez. As the crowd laughed, Martinez did too mockingly and went to attack the Frenchmen but Ooh La La had the real surprise and laid a big glancing blow to Ricky’s face. This is where the match started to become chaotic as both teams refused to be outdone. As soon as both teams jumped into the ring, Team Shockwave made sure to clear the ring of Team Tartaglia quickly. Popular song “Gangnam Style” blared through the speakers as the happy friends danced away providing a club atmosphere for all the fans to enjoy. Referee Mike Kehner soon restored order and the match resumed as Coach Jim Shorts entered the match for the first time throwing Gus Grand down to the mat. Another laugh out loud moment followed as Shorts pulled instructions from his sock on how-to-do a Figure 4 Leg Lock. As Grand struggled, both teams once again jumped into the ring and began to cause a huge melee of back and forth action. Cole Callaway sneakily slipped back into the ring planting a big kiss right on Gus Grand! Shocked and disgusted Gus fell back to the mat and became a victim of Shockwave’s Guillotine Leg Drop off the top rope for the victory! The craziness ended as the young fans in the crowd joined the victorious team in the ring dancing the night away.

Match 7: “Heartkiller” Chris Wylde retained his championship by defeating Breaker Morant w/ Joel Blackhart & “Greek God” Papadon w/ Anthony Cicco– This bitter personal war exploded into the YMCA for all to see. After having been attacked earlier in the night, Wylde at first didn’t answer the call of his own theme music but just as Papadon and Breaker started to celebrate the “Heartkiller” burst into the ring, immediately attacking both men. Showcasing the grit that makes him so beloved to the ECWA fans, he tried to defy the odds and the alliance that his opponents had made earlier in the night. The numbers game proved too much to overcome. Papadon and Breaker soon began to systemically dissect the defending champion by taking turns one upping each other with powerful blows to his neck and back. The “Greek God” and the leader of the Blackharts assaulted Wylde for well over 10 minutes straight with yakuza kicks to the back and face and power bombs meant to permanently injure the champion. The alliance was soon put to the test, however, as both men wanted to win the Unified title. Each man tried to finish Wylde off but the other would soon stop the count wanting the victory for himself. Cicco and Blackhart tried to keep the two men focused and united but after a few miscues by both men the alliance was dead. Papadon and Breaker began to fight each other back and forth completely forgetting about the slowly recovering Chris Wylde. Wylde seized the opportunity and attacked with a couple of bulldog-clothesline combos sending the challengers reeling. The momentum was shifting noticeably as the crowd started to believe more and more that the champion could once again steal a victory from the jaws of defeat. Thinking quickly, Cicco and Blackhart once again tried to refocus their respective warriors but the “Heartkiller” outsmarted everyone in the ring again and down went the two managers at the hands of their own men! However, Papadon was ECWA heavyweight champion for 560 days and showed why here as he used the distraction to down Wylde temporarily. Morant quickly went to the top rope looking for the kill but the 2012 Super 8 Champion saw it coming. Papadon jumped to the top rope and hit Breaker setting up his deadly finisher… the ’Wrath of God’ superplex-piledriver combo. Hitting the move and seemingly getting ready to regain his beloved heavyweight title, he went for the win. But just as he went for the pin, Wylde sprung to life and hit Papadon in the fact with a super kick and proceeded to pin the unconscious Breaker Morant for the AMAZING victory! The fans erupted with cheers as once again the “Heartkiller” Chris Wylde celebrated and remained the true heart of the ECWA and its fans.

– After the match, Papadon was irate at “being screwed” by ECWA booker Joe Zanolle and senior referee John Finegan “again.” The ‘Greek God’ even chased Finegan from the building and once again got physical with ECWA security. Where will the former champ go from here?

Will things continue to escalate for Papadon with his bitter hatred for ECWA management and Unified Heavyweight Champion Chris Wylde? Will this war ever end? Only time will tell.

2012 K-CUP Preview (video)

On October 6, 2012, the East Coast Wrestling Association (ECWA) will hold the second annual K-CUP (Kangaroo Cup) TAG TEAM TOURNAMENT in Newark, Delaware. The K-CUP is basically the SUPER 8 for tag teams.

The K-Cup is an 8 participant, single elimination tournament with 4 quarter-final matches, followed by a semi-final round and finals much like the ECWA Super 8.

The ECWA named the K-CUP in honor of the Fabulous Kangaroos, one of wrestling’s first full-time tag team specialists in the United States who popularized Australian rules tag team wrestling, which is tag team wrestling rules that you are accustomed to today.

The Kangaroos, while not the first tag team in the literal sense in the United States, they were one of the first to work as “tag team specialist.” They were one of the first to use or popularize a team or unit name, and a name that lived on with different incarnations with different members (original members were Al Costello and Roy Heffernan). They also were one of the first early adopters of entertainment aspects of pro wrestling using ring entrance music (Waltzing Mathilda) and also their native Australian ring jackets, hats and flag. They were great self-promoters too, as they would make and throw out cardboard boomerangs to the crowd that had their name and pictures on it.

2nd Annual ECWA K-CUP Tag Team Tournament Preview
by Brady Hicks, visit www.thebradyhicks.com

The East Coast Wrestling Association’s (ECWA) Second Annual Kangaroo Cup (K-Cup) Tag Team Tournament hits Newark, Delaware Saturday, October 6, 2012, and will do so in a big way, with eight of the top independent tag teams in the world all vying to win the tag team equivalent of Super 8.

First Round Matches Include:

The Nigerian Nightmares vs. The Order of The Black

It seems like just yesterday that The Nigerian Nightmares began tearing through the entire ECWA roster. Even more impressive is that the 800+ pound tandem has yet to really even be tested. The Nightmares have been running absolutely roughshod through ECWA’s roster for more than three years now during several stints, having leveled everyone from ECWA legends The Logans to the massive Flatliners in their path of destruction. Last year, The Nightmares were not are part of the K-Cup, but that was certainly to everyone’s benefit. For a team that has only been beaten once in the ECWA tenure, the K-Cup looks to only be getting bigger and bigger.

On the opposite side of the ring for the first round will be “The Order of the Black” Rex Lawless and Apollyon, a tandem that has been making quite a name for themselves up in New York.. Individually, Lawless and Apollyon have both had their own share of success outside of ECWA. They will certainly have to pool their collective talents if they want to make it out of the first round.

Fusion-DS vs. DNA

Last year, Fusion-DS lost their ECWA Unified Tag Titles in a very controversial manner, when matchmakers decided to force them to defend their championship in the first K-Cup tournament. An unprepared and clearly out-of-the-game Fusion-DS were defeated in short order in the first round by newcomers The Flatliners. Fast forwarding to ECWA’s 45th Anniversary Show last month, Damian Dragon and Matt Saigon were again greatly upset when their longtime rivals – The Midnight Sensations – snuck their way back onto the roster only months after losing a “Loser Leaves ECWA” match to DS. On that night, The Sensations were able to capitalize on the surprise factor … Fusion-DS were not even able to prepare … and The Sensations won the titles while wearing masks as Joel Blackheart’s mysterious “Sons of Blackheart” team.

Azrieal, meanwhile, makes his return to the ECWA, but with a different partner than many of the fans in Newark, Delaware will be used to. Azrieal has enlisted the services of former partner Dixie, as the two will reform a “DNA” team that tore through the independents of New Jersey and New York ten years ago. It was only months ago that Azrieal (with Bandido, Jr.) took Fusion-DS to the absolute limit in a tag title match in Newark. Azrieal and Dixie actually started out together in the business and are former JAPW Tag Team Champions, have teamed in ROH together and have beaten such great teams as the Briscoes and the Best Around in years past. Could this reunion between partners be just the charm he needs to beat them this time?

The Midnight Sensations vs. Action League NOW!

New ECWA Unified Tag Champions Chris Rockwell and Sam Shields could not have picked a better time to return to the promotion and win back their titles.  While they are defending K-Cup Champions, it was announced just before they won the titles from FUSION DS that the tag titles WOULD NOT be on the line this year!!!. Also The Sensations have the nefarious Joel Blackhart in their corner. Blackhart went to evil ECWA owner Mike Tartaglia and signed the Sensations under a TWA talent contract to bring them back from ECWA exile. This loophole allowed Blackhart to get the Sensations back in just before the deadline when all remaining TWA talent contracts rolled over into ECWA contracts once the ECWA & TWA titles were unified and the merger was complete. However, the Sensations and Blackhart have different ideas when it comes to the fans and Blackhart last month walked out with the tag titles saying that he owns the Sensations and that the belts are his. Will Blackhart do whatever it takes for The Midnight Sensations to extend their K-Cup dominance, and will the Sensations allow it?

It was more than a year ago that Kirby Mack competed in a series of battles with The Sensations, alongside his brother TJ. Not a lot is known about his new partner in Action League NOW! other than he was trained by Kirby, and that could certainly be to both man’s benefit as they look to unseat the incumbent champions and tourney winners.

The Magnum Modeling Agency vs. The ECWA Dream Team

Just last month, MMA associate – and once ECWA favorite – Danny E upset Kekoa in a straight-up, one-on-one match for ECWA in Delaware. Will that confidence and having his ultra-talented partner Ricky “The Model” Martinez with him (in addition to Magnum and Gus Grand) be enough to continue this momentum at K-Cup?

Inside an ECWA ring, Grand Slam winner Aden Chambers (former ECWA Heavyweight, Mid-Atlantic, Tag, and Super 8 champion) and his partner Kekoa The Flyin Hawaiian (former Mid-Atlantic champion) have formed a bond, friendship and mutual respect for one another following their classic encounter in June at Raising the Bar where Kekoa barely got the pin over Chambers. Many fans note that Chambers and Kekoa are very similar to one another in size, style and ability and of course both are adored and revered by ALL ECWA fans. While Chambers represents the old guard of ECWA, Kekoa does the same for the NEW ERA! Together they are truly a Dream Team for new and old fans alike!
